In America, we live under a political system that runs on money. Revenue is required for advertisement and other budgeted items. Just consider some of what is required for advertisement alone: Paper, printing, postage, signs, television, radio, billboards, etc.
Our political system is broken because donors can sway politicians. With the advent of social media, are we not able to go in another direction and have all candidates use this new medium to reach voters directly?
Maine is especially bad because it uses “Clean Elections” money for many political campaigns. Consider that those that make our laws have created a political welfare system for themselves. Do Mainers want three billion dollars of their taxes to pay for this system each political cycle? When one considers the other aspects of this system, it is about seven billion dollars. This is terrible!
In York County, there are five State Senators and 24 State Representatives. Each Senator can receive up to $60,000 in clean election funds (for a total $300,000) and each Representative can receive up to $15,000 in clean election money (for a total of $360,000). Taken together that is $660,000! A York County Sheriff nominee must cover the same territory, and yet, what does he get from the State of Maine Political Welfare system? NOTHING!
Please understand that I am not saying a Sheriff nominee should be part of the “Clean Elections” system. I am just pointing out its failures so that Mainers may object to their taxes being used in this way and hold their legislature accountable.
